The Arts Council of Ireland offers a number of different funding opportunities for theatre artists; full details are available on their website. A few that may be specifically relevant to playwrights are listed below. Full details and pertinent dates are available via the Arts Council of Ireland's website.
  • Theatre bursary award

The purpose of the award is to support professional artists to develop their art practice. It provides artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and critically engage with their art.

  • Theatre project award

There are four strands to this annual award:
Strand 1 – Play Development
Strand 2 – Theatre Creation
Strand 3 – Theatre Presentation
Strand 4 – Theatre Production


  • Travel and Training Award

The travel and training award has three main strands with different objectives and priorities:  Travel and training outbound (to support individuals who wish to avail of training and other professional development opportunities abroad); Travel and training inbound ( to support individuals or organisations who wish to invite specialists from abroad (outside the Island of Ireland) to deliver high-level training or mentoring for the professional development of artists and others working professionally in the arts in Ireland); and Creative Europe (Culture sub-programme) Travel Award (only supports applications from arts organisations planning to make applications for EU culture funding under the Creative Europe Programme 2014-2020).

  • Theatre artist residency scheme

The purpose of this scheme is to offer theatre artists the opportunity to create a year-long work programme in partnership with venues and local authorities. The specific contents of the work programme will be designed by the theatre artist in collaboration with the venue and/or local authority .

The Arts Council is the development agency for the arts in Northern Ireland. They are the main support for arts organisations, offering a broad range of funding opportunities through their Exchequer and National Lottery funds. Full details are available on their website.   • Support for the Individual Artist Programme
There are five separate funding streams included within the SIAP programme including :
General Arts Awards
Artists Career Enhancement Scheme
Major Individual Award
Artists' International Development Fund (Individuals)
Self Arranged Residencies 
Travel Awards 

  • Travel Awards
These awards enable individual artists to travel from Northern Ireland to develop their skills and expertise. Applicants must provide evidence that they have been invited by a host organisation in the country to which they intend to travel.  

  • Touring and Dissemination of Work
Applications are invited for proposals seeking funding in support of initiatives that are of high artistic quality and that generally have a strong audience focus.  Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme is open to applications from organisations and individuals. Applications which demonstrate collaboration / partnership between networks, consortia or other collective groupings of presenters are encouraged, particularly where these indicate a high degree of engagement with audiences and collaboration with the producing entity or artists.

Culture Ireland promotes Irish arts worldwide. They create and support opportunities for Irish artists and companies to present and promote their work at strategic international festivals and venues. Culture Ireland develop platforms to present outstanding Irish work to international audiences, through showcases at key global arts events, including the Edinburgh Festivals, the Venice Biennales and special initiatives such as the Imagine Ireland initiative in the United States (2011) and Culture Connects, the Culture Programme to celebrate Ireland's Presidency of the EU (2013).
