Does your company accept unsolicited scripts? What is your preferred method of script submission (e.g. full scripts, 10-page extracts, synopses)? Do you prefer hard copy (if so, to what address) or electronic submission (if so, to what email)?
Kabosh does not have the resources to respond effectively to unsolicited scripts consequently we prefer a creative synopsis that supports the ethos of the organisation, including, where possible, examples of dialogue. Please do not send full scripts as failure to respond often offends. The ideal submission method is electronic to the Kabosh Artistic Director Paula McFetridge, paula@kabosh.net
What should writers expect if they send a script to you? (E.g. written acknowledgement, length of time between submission and response, feedback, etc.)
Writers should expect an electronic acknowledgement within days of submission. The length of time pre response can vary depending on company workload as we are a small organisation. Feedback will be given if the idea if something that Kabosh want to develop further.
Is there a designated point of contact in your company for new writing (e.g. a resident dramaturg or literary manager)
Unlike some other Irish arts organisations, Kabosh does not have a resident dramaturg or literary manager.
What structures does your company generally employ when working on new writing (commissions, workshops, readings, work-in-progress presentations, one-on-one dramaturgical meetings, etc.)?
All of Kabosh output is new commissioned plays. Kabosh commissions playwrights whose work we have seen or who we have worked with us in the past. Each commission is for a specific subject or location – often connected to an anniversary or event. Play length varies from 15 mins to full-length and on occasions multiple playwrights are put on a single project. Kabosh offers equity / writers guild approved contracts and where possible strives to publish the scripts as production programmes.
What kind of new writing is your company interested in?
As Kabosh is primarily a site-specific theatre company we are interested in playwrights who want to animate place and space – particularly looking at exploring history of location in an unusual way, opening up contested sites so we can address our pasts and creative ways of encouraging citizens and visitors of looking at their environment with fresh eyes. Please look at the Kabosh website in advance of submitting ideas www.kabosh.net
If the above does not apply to your company, but you are still interested in fostering relationships with writers for other forms of work, how would you like to be listed?
Kabosh has a playwright database to which it send details of Kabosh projects and other local initiatives that may be of interest so we are also keen to hear from individuals who want to be added to this list. In addition we try to see as much new work as possible so please keep us informed of your work.
