![]() Does your company accept unsolicited scripts? What is your preferred method of script submission (e.g. full scripts, 10-page extracts, synopses)? Do you prefer hard copy (if so, to what address) or electronic submission (if so, to what email)?
Rough Magic does accept unsolicited scripts and lately we have decided that electronic submission is the way we would prefer to receive them. Full scripts with synopses should be sent to info@roughmagic.ie What should writers expect if they send a script to you? (E.g. written acknowledgement, length of time between submission and response, feedback, etc.) Since we only have a dramaturg working part-time for the company we are unable to provide any feedback or dramaturgical notes on scripts submitted. A letter will be sent acknowledging that the script has arrived. That letter will also say that if we feel the writer or play is of interest to us we will contact them. Is there a designated point of contact in your company for new writing (e.g. a resident dramaturg or literary manager)? The dramaturg for Rough Magic is Maureeen White. After reading a script, plays that are of interest and seem right for the company will be passed on to other members of the company to read. What structures does your company generally employ when working on new writing (commissions, workshops, readings, work-in-progress presentations, one-on-one dramaturgical meetings, etc.)? There are various ways Rough Magic works on the development of new scripts. With commissioned writers there are regular meetings with the dramaturg to talk about the development of the piece. The timing of these meetings is established with the writer. If the writer feels it is helpful we often provide actors for a day-long workshop so the writer can hear the work. Any writers on the SEEDS programme also meet regularly with dramaturg and are also offered workshops with actors to hear the script. Also as part of the SEEDS programme we offer a few days of rehearsal towards a public reading as part of the SEEDS showcase. As well Rough Magic offers production support to companies and as this often includes the development of new plays, the dramaturg is available for consultation with these companies. What kind of new writing is your company interested in? Anything that is good and exciting and makes us want to turn the page when we are reading it! |
